Join me for a three-day workshop November 11, 12, and 13th in a private studio in American Fork Utah. (I will provide the address upon registration). In this workshop we will be taking a study or small painting (plein air or otherwise) and turning it into a finished studio piece. Our goal throughout will be to improve upon our original study, enlarging it, and taking consideration for its’ composition, color, shapes, edges, and intent. We will use the principles of design to aid us in our efforts as well. All skill levels are welcome, from beginners to advanced painters. Participants will have an opportunity to send me any painting related questions before the event, that I will strive to cover during our time together.
Space is limited and the group size is small so everyone will have ample opportunity for personal instruction and personal feedback.
Tentative Schedule:
The workshop will go from 9am to 4pm each day. This is a rough outline of the schedule (subject to change).
9am-12am: Instruction, and Live Demo
12-1:00 Lunch Break
1-4:00pm Personal Painting Time with Instructor Feedback.
Painting Materials:
Each participant should bring a small study to serve as a starting point for your studio piece, as well as a larger canvas (large but not so large that it takes up too much space or doesn’t fit on your portable easel. 11×14-18×24 should be fine.)
Participants will be responsible for bringing their own materials in a portable set up (likely what you would use for plein air.) I recommend bringing what you are comfortable painting with.
As a point of reference, I will be bringing the following:
Brushes: #4, #8, #12 Flats, #8 Round, #12 Round (all are hog hair bristle).
Palette: Titanium White, Cad Yellow Light, Cad Red Light, Yellow Ochre, Phthalo Green, Ultra Marine Blue,
I will be doing a demo with Gamblin Portland Greys (Light, Medium, and Dark). These are super helpful and I recommend everyone have them, but they are not required. (During this portion you can also use grayscale pens/markers, or even pencil.
Surfaces: I like to paint on linen panels, or gessoed hardboard. Bring what you are comfortable painting on, again in the 11×14”- 18×24” range.
Gear: Sealable stainless steel can with Gamsol, pochade box, sturdy tripod, paper towels, trash bags, and a backpack-bag to carry everything.
